English Standard

English Standard is a general course for students to increase their expertise in English and consolidate their English literacy skills. Students learn to respond and compose a wide variety of texts in a range of situations to be effective, creative and confident communicators. They study a range of texts including prose fiction, drama, poetry, non-fiction, film, media and digital texts. In Year 11 students will complete a common module with students in the Advanced course called Reading to Write and then two modules, Module A: Contemporary Possibilities and Module B: Close Study of Literature. In Year 12 students again study a common module with English Advanced and then three modules specifically designed for the Standard course.

English Studies

The English Studies course is designed for those intending to choose an apprenticeship, traineeship or a vocational course with a training provider like TAFE. The modules studied focus on written and spoken language techniques used as the base of all communications in the real world. Students practise writing styles and text formats that they will use in the workforce, and gain an understanding of persuasive techniques used in advertising through investigating texts from different industries. Within the course, there are two compulsory modules that explore the connection between creative texts and the world we live in. All other modules are student centred: they are designed to fit the interests and needs of those enrolled in the course. This flexibility in learning assist students with engagement and success.

English Advanced

English Advanced is a higher-level course designed for students who enjoy English and want the challenge of discussing ideas and texts that develop their higher-order thinking skills and refine their imaginative and analytical writing skills. Students learn to respond to a wide range of texts, including Shakespearean plays, to develop their academic achievement. They also compose texts in a variety of forms for different audiences and purposes. In Year 11 students will complete a common module with students in the Advanced course called Reading to Write and then two modules, Module A: Narratives that Shape Our World and Module B: Critical Study of Literature. In Year 12 students again study a common module with English Advanced and then three modules specifically designed for the Advanced course.

English Extension

The English Extension courses are for students with a passion for English who love literature, film and multimodal texts. Students study English Advanced and then choose Extension 1 as an additional English course in Years 11 and 12. The Year 11 Extension 1 course involves exploring a module called Texts, Culture and Value in which we investigate a genre or concept in detail. The Year 11 Independent Research Project gives students an opportunity to pursue an area of personal interest. In the Year 12 Extension 1 course students investigate Literary Worlds in the common module before studying set and related texts in an elective module. The Year 12 Extension 2 course involves students creating their own Major Work in a form such as a short story or film.
